February 6, 2013 - Booked For Lunch Hosts Nancy Saddler



Nancy Larsen-Sanders discusses with the luncheon group at the Pioneer Memorial Library how she wrote the first volume of "The Mourning Doves Message. She told us that some of the descriptions in the book were written from personal discovery, experiences and exposure to some of the subjects contained in her text. The second book "All Stubborned Up" was written from the perspective of individuals dealing with Alzheimer's. Melany Wilks, Library, Director had a small round table discussion with Nancy after she talked about the writing of both items. Nancy's books are excellent and will keep your attention.

 

Chocolate And All That Jazz 2013!

We had a great time celebrating Valentines Day with the citizens in Colby and the surrounding area. The Colby Community College Jazz Band and the Colby Community Sunflower Singers performed while we enjoyed chocolate, red and white deserts of all types. What a fun night! Thank you CCC Jazz Band and Sunflower Singers! Thank your to the Friends group, library staff and others who donated the wonderful food.

 

 

With an overflow crowd of 167 attendees in the basement and upstairs for overflow, we have food in two places!

 

 

January's Booked For Lunch hosted Nancy Lepell

 

 

The library hosted Friend Board Member and Accountant, Nancy LePell to talk about the book, "Outliers." She told us how people born at certain times have been proven to be more successful. How what month a child is born can make a difference and that successful people really stand on the shoulders of others. There are no lone successes. Everyone becomes successful with the aide of others. She also told us that just because a person is a genius will not make them successful. It is the interactions and opportunities in their lives that help to create an environment of success. Nancy confessed that this was only the beginning of the very interested discussion in this book. She challenged us to read it and learn more.

Family History/Genealogy Workshop
Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 2:30 to 4:00 pm.
We will learn online as well as regular ways to
 solve mysteries about your family history.

CHOCOLATE AND ALL THAT JAZZ is here again!!

Don't forget to come to CHOCOLATE AND ALL THAT JAZZ! at the Pioneer Memorial Library on Valentines Day, Thursday - February 14, 2013 @ 7:00 pm. We will be having the CCC Jazz band and the CCC Sunflower Singers. Enjoy various desserts while enjoying their music. Bring your special sweetheart, friend or family member. The event is free.

Author, Nancy Larsen-Sanders will review her most recently published book "The Mourning Dove's Message." We will take some time and discuss with her how she decided to also write "All Stubborned Up." Come see her speak Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 12:00. We provide lunch.

The citizens of the area will be reading the humorous book selected as the Kansas Reads book, entitled "Then We Came to the End," by Joshua Ferris. We will be then having Valeria Brown-Kuchera lead the discussion of the fun subject as presented by the author. Read with us, bring your stories and be ready to enjoy the evening on March 4, 2013 at the Pioneer Memorial Library at 7:00 pm.

January 2013 - Booked For Lunch

Nancy LePell reviewed the book, Outliers," by Malcom Gladwell. She allowed us to understand that people who are either extremely talented, famous or noted for their accomplishments did not just appear. She allowed us to look into the writing of Gladwell and learn that we are helped by our dates of birth within a people group or history, by environment, by influences either positive or negative of others, and by our cultures.

Jerry Barlow, Celtic Guitarist at the Pioneer Memorial Library!

Jerry Barlow came to the Pioneer Memorial Library for December's Booked For Lunch! The crowd of attendees enjoyed Jerry's playing of Celtic music. His historical information on many of his songs was a delight to our patrons. His humor and self-deprecation was also very enjoyable. It is evident that hours of practice make it possible for Jerry to play with such skill and nimble dexterity. This presentation was provided by funds given through the Garvey Foundation.

Pippa White performs at the Pioneer Memorial Library

Actress and Storyteller Pippa White kept the patrons at the Pioneer Memorial Library spell bound as she performed her program entitled "Voices Of Ellis Island." Her character, voices and basic costuming changed so fluidly that we were taken into her space. We felt and understood a lot more just a little about what the immigrants would have felt.

Pippa White also performed at the Colby Middle School the program "Orphan Train." Students, teachers and administrators were greatly affected by her presentation. Students and teachers from other local schools were invited to attend as well.  The Pioneer Memorial Library was able to bring her to the local school through special grant funds. We believe in partnering with others to enhance our community.

Trivia Night 2012

 

The Pioneer Memorial Library held its annual Trivia Pursuit. We had a great time with new question areas such as "Name That Tune."

 

 

 

First Prize this year was a $10.00 certificate for Frozen Yogurt from Udder Delicious. It was neck and neck all night. The winning team would have waxed others but they did not listen to one of their members. She had the answer at the last round! Everyone had a terrific time.





November 2012 - Booked For Lunch

Tom Peyton presented a review of two books the morning after the US election. He helped us grasp that we should see the miracles in the world and in our country that were turning points for our lives. He gave us a challenge to look at the long view of history and events not just yesterdays joys or disappointments. This talk also helped prepare us for celebrating Thanksgiving for all the ways we have been blessed in our nation.

October - Booked For Lunch - Brings Technology Librarian, Dave Fischer to library!

 

We had a great Booked for Lunch this week. Dave Fischer of the Northwest Kansas Library System enlightened us on the literary acumen of Clive Cussler. I did not know that this author was given a PhD due to his scholarly writing on the book “Sea Hunters.” He is also the founder for the organization, National Underwater Marine Agency (NUMA). This group searches for treasures in the sea. They have found quite a few vessels including a civil war submarine. Cussler has written about these adventures through the series call “The Numa Files. He also has done some historical type fiction on the most recent book published, “The Tomb.” It is about Attila the Hunn. Clive has done historical fiction on other characters such as Napoléon Bonaparte. I was sufficiently impressed that I may have to read a book or two of his.

Jean Hutton Memorial allows Library to add Art and Beauty!

The family of Jean Hutton has given the Pioneer Memorial Library $6500.00 to beautify and make the circulation and checkout area of the library more dynamic. Funding through the Dallas Women's Foundation has aided the family to contribute to this special memorial for Jean Hutton.  The library invited local artists to submit art work to go on the wall behind the circulation desk. The Pioneer Memorial Library Board of Trustees chose the piece to be placed as the memorial. Sheena Hemmert piece was chosen because of its beauty, Kansas values and ways it expressed our library motto: Bringing Words To Life!  

Other important items add with the memorial gift was the actual placing of our motto on the opposite wall of the circulation desk. Along with that we placed creative canvas pieces to draw the colors of the rooms decor all together. As patrons come into our environment they read the theme and then turn to view the artwork that was made for this theme. The memorial also gave funds to have made a wonderful desk, painted wall, clock, plaque, and new signage in the library.
